By your horrible grammar and spelling mistakes I can see that you are FAR more superior than us all! </sarcasm>

And no. Im not that creative. Thats always been my problim. I have maybe 5 or 6 names that i just reuse over and over for all the characters i have ever made. Once i make a character that character becomes "Real" FOR ALL ETERNITY! And with out a good and decent name to associate them with i would rather simply clump their experiances in with another character that is close, and just pretend they are an alternate dimention coppy or some such.

See i started playing mmos when things where not so static, there where real identities and personalities in the community back then, and as such there where always totaly awesome names that did totaly awesome things. Names are important, much more important than looks actualy. Your name is your lable, you ARE your name. Need a good name.
I'm sure nobody wants to see you further degrade the english language so please go away or learn how to spell before you continue to shit out of your mouth.

Well considering the way that names are handled (basicaly, 19 characters of any combination you can think of provided it falls into two simple rules (only letters and at least two words) makes me think that the two word minimum is not required for the game to work properly insofar as how character data is stored (after all a space is just another 'character' in how computers think) i dont think it would be hard to change.

Now naturaly the prime reason that changing at this point would be a bad idea is that, with out a way to change an existing characters name (which would be a deal more difficult to impliment) it would not be right for people who wanted a one word name but had to pick more than one and now have old characters that they want to keep.

But do not forget that my question was not 'why dont they change it?' but simply, 'whos idea was it?'. I just want someone to be displeased with. ^_^\

Oh, and thank you "TheLordOfBlah" for your dignified and well thought out contribution to this discussion. The internets would surley be lost with out your sage wisdom. However i must point out that;

Also, to reply to someone way up who commented on not calling their real life friend whos game name was "Some real long thing i cant be bothered to remember" instead of dan or stan or whatever it was. Yes, or rather no. You should not call him dan.

Here is a story. A good real life friend of mine, my best friend actualy - which is saying alot because of all the people i have known and been frendly and on good terms with few have i counted even as regular friends - used to play online rpgs with me, alot. MMORPGs mostly. Now, this friend, lets call him 'Bob' (because thats his name ) lives not even a mile from my residence. There was a time when i would see him almost ever day, in person. And we would go about the town, back before the lure of synthetic worlds forever bound me to my room and away from the wind and the trees and m&m cookies (boy where those good). Now despite knowing this person extreemly well and him me, we never refered to eachother as the same person in games. Even in private conversation we where different and i would call him by his characters name and he I. And in games we would marry if possible on occasion, or sometimes be married to other people. In general we where not the same people. We where different from our characters.

Now, the thing is we never roleplayed, no. Not once! Role playing is... playing a role. Roleplayers come up with backstories and good ones are totaly convincing and able to 'get into' their character, like an actor. Roleplayers are actors. Not me. I suck at acting. But again, the difference between imersion and roleplay is here. We may discuss going to the mall or on a trip, in game. We where obviously 'out of character'. But the simple fact that we where at that time 'inside' our characters bodies meant that we where not ourselves either.

People who see their characters not as individuals but simply puppets sicken me. The poor characters ;_; they have feelings too, you are simply the spark of life, your body does not exist in the game world, only your 'essence', you are then a disembodied spirit, who must enter them to bring them to life.

Macrogaming, macro not meaning a bot or a program but as in the oposite of micro, that is, playing the game from behind your computer controling a puppet, being you, thinking you are you and presenting yourself as yourself to others in the game, the person behind the computer. Is evil. A great evil.

I actualy formulated a religion based around gaming that i wrote up a while ago. Not a religion so much as one of those 'ways of life' sort of non-directed spirituality that is so common today in the self help sections of your local bookstore. Perhaps i should publish it.

Hi there! That has already been said aproximatly three times before you. It would be proper to quote one of those like posts and say "agreed" or some such. Then it would apear that you had read the thread. I just realised that i see this sort of action on these forums quite frequently 0_0. Its like, people come here just to argue

Hmm, let me try.

Yeah...Right. If you have no idea why you're being flamed, then you deserve to be flamed, simple as that. Even if you aren't acting as pompous as you are on purpose.

The two name rule was put in there to try to encourage people to come up with roleplaying-like names. First, and last name.

Sure, some people go with "I Bob I" or somesuch, surround their name with stupid letters, but that doesn't mean you have to. Get over it, if you really must have a one word name, just put an X around it, or combine it with another of your names.

You also can't spell for crap, is english your native language?

To be honest, I was even gonna try to defend what the OP was trying to say... until his later posts revealed his character.

how does having less options promote more creativity? And frankly J O H N isn't very creative...it's kinda annoying when you wish to role play. People want only one name...they will find a way to get it in the game, so why not just allow it to happen.

Just because pots and kettles are both black it doesn't make them the same thing. Running everywhere would require a dramatic revamp of the game. Allowing us to have but one name does not.

And you make a good example of my point.

What I dont understand is why we can't have both?

One word or two, its all up to you. As long as no one else has the same name its all fine and dandy, I think it would've pleased everyone... even our Ub3r L337 OP, Sidrakket teh h4x0r.

I really like that guildwars forces you to chose two names and think its a fantastic idea, especially for role players.
could it be because these games are made by a western civilization? Not that it really matters. I just see that as bad support. BTW, I can name at least 20 characters with only one name and if Baulder's Gate, BGII, Fallout, FOII, PS:T, Elder Scrolls, ...blah blah don't count then I don't know what does. They all have characters with single names in them.

I've been playing mmorpgs since '95 (Diablo).
The only people that actually care about spelling are older people that jump on the mmorpg bandwagon and try to act superior because they are "more mature".
If I wanna call my tune penis breath thats my right.
Spelling doesnt matter its an mmorpg go RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO yourself learn to speak leetspeak if your going to bitch about everyone needing to learn to speak english.

Getting to the point:
I dont mind the space requirement. I find it worse when im not allowed a space like in the Diablo series when people would just use a hyphen or underscore. The space is nice but I agree that people shouldnt have to call there characters P E N I S, or B O B B Y.
I dont understand why they made this a requirement yet didnt perceive that it wouldnt be an affective way of making people use RP names. Not sure why they want people to use RP names nehow. I suppose its just another way to serve the customer they care about. The vast majority of "mature" "superior" people that started playing guildwars and would rather have names like Derek Deathblade and use premade W/Mo's with hard resses in 4v4.
My 2 cents

And i have pointed out several times why this does absolutly nothing towards that goal.

Apparantly I do have to do that if i want a one word name. But then thats not a one word name its a terribly stupid multi-word name.

Quote:

Everyone has to has at least one flaw

.

Also. You people, i dont quite understand? As ive said i am an elitist. Lets get a definition for that;

NOUN:

1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.

As you see, it is order. A nice and neat universe where everyone has a set value. I endorce this system yes. And as ive said elsewhere i do not place myself at the very top of the pile in this specific structure. I am quite humble realy. Nice and structured society where everyone has a place. There are some structures where i am at the very bottom. For example i dont know a single thing about automobiles. Not a thing! In a car forum i would be frightened! Awed by the greatness of many around me. And i would cower and fall into my place.

Everyone has a place, in every single structure. Form gardening to medicin to art and soforth. Everyone has a place in all of those structures.

--EDIT: Diablo is not an mmorpg (however diablo(1) was an awesome game=P) An mmorpg is a persistant world having, id say probably at least 200 people. This game is not exacly an mmorpg realy as its instanced, its more like diablo actualy, in that the towns are the chat channels, and the instances are the 'games'. Hmm, maybe the diablo-like social structure would be more applicable to guild wars than the mmorpg one, its just that this games balance reminds me so much of my first mmorpg (nexustk)

None of this really matters as I doubt it will be changed but it's just silly to be flaming this guy for a valid complaint...flame for the other stuff all you want but there is no GOOD reason not to have to choose two names...

IT DOES NOT PROMOTE CREATIVITY
NOT EVERYONE ON THIS EARTH HAS TWO NAMES
SOME DON'T WANT TWO NAMES
LIMITING CHOICES DOES NOT RESULT IN MORE VARIATION

I've seen claims against all these statements but the arguments were all quite...circular. I mean really give me some good reasons against any of my statements.

What i hate is the millions of unoriginal stolen names (my name Melkor, stolen but known only to LOTR diehards, or people who read all the books) Like Legolas The Elf, then Legolis The Elf, Legoolas The Elf, Lagolis The Eelf
